Hi all,

I've just removed all the upstairs sockets ( mk plastic type ) and replaced them with lap brushed stainless sockets. I have earthed them and also earthed them to the back box I've also checked all wires are tight and good but the mcb keeps tripping out? It has only started doing this since I put these new sockets on. Any help much appreciated!

you have a short circuit somewhere. live wire nipped by metal back box? earth wire touching live terminal somewhere? may be worth to get an electrician to have a look at it and test the circuit properly.

Time to either get your test equipment out and carry out some tests, or get a electrician in who can do it for you if your not competant to do it.

A house that I used to rent had metal light switches.

The landlord had to call an electrician in for a job, and he discovered that none of the switches were earthed (cables has been cut and taped, if memory serves). He reckoned that a previous electrician had done it to stop the rcd tripping.

Not sure if that was true and...NO...I'm not suggesting that as a solution :)

@rogger44, time to get an electrician in at this stage as all of the above have said. You a have a potentially dangerous situation on your hands. A "fault find" like this is not that difficult or costly, long as you tell the electrician all the information. For the price of two or three of your new sockets it can be tested, fixed and working in about an hour(ish).
