hi i have just bought a 1651 from ebay but am not 100% sure that it works iam new to testing and plan on taking the c & g fundamental corse soon for testing

problem is i have been testing sum circuits that i have rigged up in my garage to get me used to the meter problem is when i set the meter to continuity on a ring main i get these reader between

line 0.21
neutral 0.23
cpu 0.27

after having a look at the osg all seem well then it says put the line of the outgoing ring main onto the neutral return and test at the sockets so i plugged in the socket lead and when i press the test button the screen just stays on 2000m

just wondering if you could help me out as am not sure if the meter is faulty

also seem to be having problems with ir test but i have never used one of these so i could just be doing it wrong any advice of help would be great thanx from mike :)

you have to start sumwhere

anyone no of any dvd from this meter which take you though step by step

The reading at the top seem ok, but when you say on test 2 when you get 2000m, that might be because you havent interconnected the other side (incoming line - outgoing neutral) to create the ''figure 8''...

Hope this helps and btw did you find use of the Fluke 165x manual i sent you??..:)

cheers dan like i said it hard starting off when you dont have a clue

will have a look at the manual but i got one with the fluke but its not very clear i think for a novice

yes thanx dan got the manual cheers but its going alitle over my head

The manual will only give you instructions of how to use the machine and not how to carry out the tests.

Guidance Note 3 is perfect for explaining how to perform various tests and the readings that should be expected.

As been said, you have to connect both line and neutrals across each other with a connector block and not just one 'end'.

You then take a measurement at each socket and the readings should be near enough the same throughout.

Exactly the same test is carried out with l/cpc cross connected. This will give you your R1 + R2.

The first test you did was a continuity test of the RFC conductors (r1, r1, rn).

Its a steep learning curve and is very tricky to get your head round and understand, but with plenty of practice (maybe at some friends houses or your parents), it will all eventually make sense. Sort of.

it says >2000M because the ring is open with 1 interconnection you would test L2 + N1 not at the sockets. once you have done that you can connect L2 + N1 together now you have 2 interconnections. now you can test at the sockets the readings should be 1/4(approx) of your reading from the previous test.

NICEIC have a good dvd called initial testing & verification in domestic installations might be worth getting this at 19.99 also do the periodic inspection and verification on domestics about same price ! their on NICEIC website. I have these as well as publications from them and very usefull stuff.

Switch your sockets on when testing.

And connect Leg1 Live with Leg 2 Neutral and vise versa.

for your pictures marked r1r2 your actually taking R1 + Rn it seems for r1+r2 you would interconnect line 1 + earth 2, line 2 + earth 1 then test at each socket the highest reading you take would be your r1+r2 reading this should be roughly 1/4 of the L+E reading.
