Just after some advice on what you would do if you were an "on-call electrician" for a hospital and when you arrived on site the generator was running? --- Apart from obviously **** your pants! :D

Check main incoming for voltage? Check generator oil? Alarms?

Not had much experience with generators

check mains voltage check enough desil to keep running if you have mains voltageall 3 phases and change over hasnt changed back phone geyy engineer to check Iv had 2 where the genny wasnt signaling mains voltage although it was ok also some gennys have runon

Check fuel!!!!

After one power failure, generator cut in nicely thank you and it was fitted with a day tank next to it. It held about 5 hours worth of fuel with genny at full load. Anyway, power was off for 4 hours and someone decieded to check levels of day tank and obviously low. Tried to pump from Main tanks to day tanks and couldn't. Major emergency!!!!!

Also check you can transfer fuel.

Question is, why is genny running. Is it obvious power failure? If not, look at controls to see why genny is on. Has it changed over or is it just running at no-load. Look at dials. It will be giving you a voltage output but how much current / KW is being consumed. Depends on the gen set.

It depends how advanced the geney install is.

Some I've worked are programmed to auto start and run for a designated amount of time and they also contain a mobile phone sim card which the maintenance company can ring and download all the data to check for optimum performance and for any issues that may be lurking.

Other than that it could be as the lads have said, auto start on mains failiure if thats the case then as you've said check all alarm signals and fluid levels etc make sure all's well.
