the lights in my living room are on their last legs, probably about 20 years old so they have had a good innings. so i'm on the market for some new lights, nothing too fancy but i'd like ones that last, so CFL i think. last time i bought a CFL lamp it was crap, flickered like mad on startup and it was a horrible bright white light. is there somebody that makes a flicker free warm white CFL lamp & light setup??

i've looked through several catalogues, and several shops online now for the past hour and none of them mention flicker free startup so i'll assume they flicker! anybody reccomend some god brands to look at? i might be persuaded to go LED if theres some sort of garauntee on the life of the lamps, cos im my opinion at the moment LED is a complete con. loads of claims that they will last forever and they don't last any longer than a standard halogen or sometimes less

cfl's are pants. totally. all depends on what type of lights you want.

well whats good then? i've never had to replace a cfl lamp yet, thats why i think they are good.

half the lights in ours came from car boot sales. couple of chandeliers (not huge ones like the trotters sketch), some G9 halogens, some with candle bulbs. sure you can find some decent ones from specialist lighting suppliers. electric center do a small range.

I regularly install JCC LED7 downlighters. I have 12 in my own house. The lamps are built in and they claim 75,000 hours life. So thats 5 hours a day for about 40 years without changing a lamp/fitting. They are bright, nice light, dont flicker,7 watts and cost about £40 to a guy in the know.

I have a retail shop as well as being a sarks and reglarly supply light fittings. If you were a customer that had just come in and asked 'I want some new lights' but didn't know what exactly you wanted then I'd give you a couple of books and tell you to come back with a short list of what you like.
Have a look through the Endon range as they have a great selection, don't cost the earth but aren't cheap tat. Home :: Endon Lighting
Personally I quite like CFL (sorry teletrix) If you get a decent make, ie not supermarket or pound shop, they can give good start up light, good lifespan and energy savings but you get what you pay for. I've had good results from Crompton, Megaman, Wellco for small candle types and recently I've started stocking Dencons Lyvia eco range which are really small for the light output. I sell hundreds of CFL's a month to picky old dears and don't get any complaints so they can't be that bad. It seems the great majority of new fittings use halogen capsules which I think is a backwards step. There's usually loads of the bloody things on one fitting, all running 40W and very hot. I'd rather use a maximum of 3 cfl candles to do the same job. The 'horrible bright white light' you've had before just means you bought cool or daylight cfl's instead of warm white.

cfls are horrible things, the best for room lighting is a full size fluorescent light (3-6ft), you can get them in cool or warm white, they don't cast shadows and it's as bright as day, don't buy those poncy decorative fittings, they burn out all the time and are about as bright as a match.

I can assume you have a lovely looking 6' twin fluorescent fitting plonked in the middle of you louge ceiling then....... ;0)

so far i've found a few that look acceptable, all far too expensive (£75 per light?). so i fitted a batten holder out of the van, it will do for now!

You get what you pay for. If they were quality, dedicated cfl lights and that was a retail price inc VAT then it was quite reasonable. You don't get good, cheap, anything.

If that was a trade price exc VAT then they might be a bit pricey. When you compare £75 to six or eight LED downlighters it starts to look like good value for money.......

no that was just fittings for 2 X E27 lamps, in which i would put 2 CFL lamps. i couldnt find any dedicated CFL light fittings that stated they were flicker free on startup, infact i couldn't actually find any listed on a website where i could just buy them, i had to find a supplier first which was no easy task! i've just got no time for all this searching at the minute ill just make do with the batten holder.
