Hi

I've come across a fire alarm system in a nightclub where they have A1R heat detectors only in every room is this acceptable ? or should they have smoke detectors as well?

Thanks

We've had to request that fire alarm installs be redesigned a few times on new build theatres and clubs due to some pillock of a designer not thinking about what happens when a smoke machine is used!

Thats why i always install Gent systems. with a gent addressable key switch next to the panel........

One of those!

in the event of smoke machines being used, one turn of the key and the affected areas switch from smoke to heat. it also puts a fault onto the panel to remind you to switch it back once the smoke machine gets put away.

Some local authorities take a very dim view of such things when it comes to getting the place licensed. This varies wildly between local authorities though.

I know of one theatre which has a switch next to the prompt desk which isolates the smoke detectors for 1 hour at a time due to a stroppy licensing inspector not allowing a normal isolation procedure.

These dont isolate or disable, they simply switch the state of a pre determined group of detectors from smoke to heat

Which a least gives the property some protection.....Multi sensors on most addressable panels will do the same, switching between heat & smoke via keyswitch or time of day using internal time clock...very useful in school or hotel kitchens, switching from heat to smoke at say 8pm at night.
Be all here is what BC have requested, if they want all heat then give it to them with a variation on the cert.
