Just thought I'd introduced myself - currently doing my level 2 2330 (have been doing so since September). Have nearly finished all the theory and have all my practicals lined up for the beginning of January 2009.

Unfortunately I have recently been made redundant (I have worked in shipping for 13 years). However on a more positive note it gives me more time for study!

Does anyone have any useful tips either regarding the qualifications or the role of an electrician?

The thing to remember about electrics is that once you start on that road you will be constantly learning something new on a regular basis.

It’s a very long train journey with many stops on the way for refreshments of more knowledge. Don't be afraid to ask questions no matter how silly it may sound, what stage your at and how much P*** taking you are going to get, its all part of the journey.

There is no electrician that I know that would say 'I know it all' because there will always be something new. Just look at the recent years, Part P, wiring colour changes to merge with the EU and the 17th Edition.

Dig deep into your books, asks questions and get stuck in. You will find lots of different types of spark and you will be able to learn something from all of them. Even learning by the mistakes they have made. They all will have a story to tell.

Depends on which direction you want to take to what qualifications you could do but I guess most sparks will do all the formal training and then look more towards the more specialist area's such as Inspection & Testing and Design. It’s really up to you?

I would say do the qualifications that you are going to need in your chosen career.
