Hello,

I recently bought a 1960s-built house.

It had an electric storage heater in it that I wanted to remove. A notice on the heater said to remove the bricks before undoing the wall mounts so I went about taking the bricks out. This was fine for the layer in front of the heating elements but I couldn't work out how to get the bricks behind out. Anyway my attempt to remove the heater and then be able to either sell or throw ended when the rest of it fell and smashed some of the white blocks that surrounded the heating elements. I then took to just dismantling it but I found two materials that I am now concerned may have been asbestos or contained asbestos. One was a sort of soft greyish material that was to the sides and top of the heater, just inside of the outer metal case. It reminded me of wool or cigarette filters. The other was two flat white slightly padded rectangular pieces inside of the metal casing at the front and back of the heater. On one of these the white outer material had some cracks in it letting the padding/filling out a bit.

I have seen webpages that list models of electric heaters that are know to contain asbestos but I can't find my model number on any of them. Also the electric heater didn't seem to have any manufacturer's name on it so I am wondering if anyone out there could help me identify the manufacturer so I can contact them to see if it contained asbestos.

Obviously I am quite concerned as the grey wool-like material broke apart and released a fair amount of fibres into the air when I was dismantling it. The white padded material didn't do this so much though.

The information I could locate about the heater on its outside was:
SH24 - 439358
Series A
Serial No. 000105M

Any help would be greatly received.

This is not conclusive and must not be taken as fact, but in my opinion that heater is very unlikely to contain ACMs. Various sources give 1976 as the general cutoff date for use in storage heaters, or 1982 as an outright ban. The heater bears the modern CE-marking applied from 1993 onwards and the heater looks newer than that (CE marking for products was not even considered before 1987).

The woolly material around the sides looks like rockwool / glass wool, I cannot see the material at the front clearly but there are various non-ACM products it could be.

Hi Novice, welcome to the forum, I approved your thread earlier but didn't have time to look at it for a response but Im singing the same song here as Lucien, the material around the bricks is rockwool and it does look a recent model as also pointed out, I wouldn't be too worried you intitial concerns then.

PS you need to loosen the terminal screws at the bottom of each element to remove them to get the brick out at the back :)... of course the heater will be safely disconnected from any power point at this stage.

Hi,

Thanks, that is re-assuring.

I did try to loosen the screws and remove the elements but they seemed so tightly done-up I thought that this was not the way to do it so in the end as I said in post the whole thing fell over and smashed the white bricks the elements are in.

I assume the white brick-like material the elements are in is safe too?

Thanks

Hello I hope someone can help me with a similar problem. I have no idea what model or how old the storage heater is in the flat I just bought. It's creda, it has a sticker stating 'Creda Storage Radiator'
serial no. 183c 004747
Cat no. 7906 20000qx
But sadly there is no other info on it. I've hopefully attached 3 pictures to help. I found a list online of heaters containing asbestos but don't even know what mine is..
I'd like to update it but am a bit stuck without knowing much about this one. I'd really appreciate any responses
Many thanks

I think the model No. is 79062, Many Creda heaters have 5-digit model numbers beginning with 7. This probably makes it a TSR range heater from the early 80's which the list shows to be asbestos free. Please double-check this information if possible before assuming it is indeed asbestos free.

Thanks for the information. I've at least got a decade to go on and it sounds a bit more promising as the asbestos ones tend to be 70s I think. Wasn't it stopped in the early 80s? I appreciate your reply so soon esp with so little to go on..

Google is your friend.
From another site Asbestos in storage heaters

In relation to asbestos in storage heaters, insulation materials using asbestos were withdrawn in 1973. All storage heaters made from 1974 onwards have been asbestos free. There is a list comprehensively covering all old brands and models suspected to contain asbestos. Being 37 years old it is uncommon that many of these heaters are still in service. For example Dimplex xl and Dimplex xls models never contained asbestos.
