Hello,

Looking for some assistance with installing a dimmer switch in my basement. This is the only switch that controls the lights and there are two sets of black/white wires and a ground (see picture below). The capped black/white wires on the top in the picture below does not have any power when I use a tester but I do get power when I use the tester on the black and white wires on the bottom.

I have also provided a picture below of the wiring on the dimmer switch. I thought I was following the instructions correctly when I connected the live black wire to the black wire on the switch, the the white wire to the red wire on the switch, and the ground to the ground. I capped the red/white wire on the back of the switch (not used). When I flipped the breaker on, I got a loud pop and it tripped the breaker switch.

What am I doing wrong? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Refit the original switch and see if it all functions. I assume the uncapped wires were the original connections to the switch.

There was a remote switch there before that only had two wires (a black wire and a blue wire). Unfortunately I don't remember how it was wired (I could kick myself for not taking a picture of how it was wired before I uninstalled it). That would have been helpful.

What do you mean by remote switch, I see no blue wire there.
