Hi,

I’m a DIYer

I am trying to replace an outside PIR lamp which is connected to an internal fused switch in the hall. Removing the cover of the existing lamp there are 4 wires connected to a junction box - the left one is marked * and the others live, neutral and earth (See attached image)
The lamp fixes on to this with 3 prongs - so it looks the earth isn’t connected. (See image)

The new lamp (see image for connection block) contains no instructions for connecting 4 wires (it does require an earth) The second connector in the block has an earth lug connected to the fitting where the wire enters the unit. How does the new lamp accommodate the wiring?

Ano suggestions or comments would be very welcome. Also what price approximately would an electrician charge for this work - the lamp fixes to the wall with 4 screws/plugs supplied with the unit.

Thanks

Moribund

New fitting
from left to right on picture ( top to bottom as fitted on wall)

brown
green/yellow
grey (blue sleeve)
black (brown sleeve)

be aware, whatever other lights are being switched from this sensor light must be low power, NOT Halogen flood lights! 100w max including the new light itself.

Many thanks for the quick response James.

The 4th connection in this block already has two wires connected - as brown on the top (going to the lamp) and red to the bottom (going to the PIR) - would you share a connection with either of these with the black (brown sleeve) supply

No other lights are using this circuit- 60 watt bulb is recommended max

The black wire with brown sleeve is a dual purpose wire.
if it is made live by another sensor or override switch the light will come on regardless of the pir sensing something or not.
it also means that when the pir senses something, it not only turns on the light but also anything else that is powered by the black wire.

it should be added to the connector block and the other wires in there should be left connected as they are.

Thanks that’s useful information James, So when I connect the black (brown sleeve) to the block I need to Share a connection with either the brown or red on the 4th connection- probably the red as the supply cable will be coming in from this direction?
