Help with choosing replacement capacitor

I recently had the motor on my Delta dust collector stop working. It was setting off the breaker on the side of motor after just a few seconds of turning on. After researching I discovered the problem with this motor is commonly the run capacitor. When I opened the cover to the capacitor I found one of the wires burned off and the top bulging. So, I need to know if the attached photo is the correct replacement for the other photo of the old black capacitor. Thanks for any help.

Welcome fivestripes I honestly don’t think replacing that is going to help, in my opinion I would have to say that your motor is fried. Never seen one burnt that bad

Thanks for your reply. Do you think there is any harm in trying the replacement to see if the motor still works since it’s an inexpensive part?

Yes it is the correct part. It is rated for a higher voltage which is good but may mean it is physically larger, make sure it will fit in the housing. As Megawatt says, the motor winding might be damaged; it is difficult to test without specialised gear although if there's no.sign or smell of burnt varnish and it runs at normal temperature without excess noise or vibration when a new capacitor is fitted, it's probably fine.

Just a thought - the old cap was plastic cased, your suggested replacement is metal. If the metal can is accessible once fitted, it should be earthed. Make sure it has adequate clearance from contacting terminals etc. If suspect, find a plastic-cased replacement.

Never seen one burnt that bad

Have seen and replaced so many failed caps, several had turned into a melted blob. Motors protected with a proper overload that is set correctly it will likely have no thermal damage.
