Hi,

Im Jack and am engineer who in my spare time is upgrading my house, which includes electrical. Not my speciality and low in confidence so thought i would join here!

welcome to the asylum of electrical mayhem. loads of advice here, but be aware that a lot of members will advise employing an electrician for anything above the capabilities of the average home owner. as an engineer, you may be capable of doing anything you need, but without the correct test equipment you cannot be sure that it is safe and compliant.
 
Welcome jack, if you have a question for advice then check the archives with the search button. It will have already been answered and under the latest regulations.
As Tel says above, take note of any professional advice given. Leccy is dangerous and notifiable so perhaps working with a local electrician you would enjoy the renovation more.
