Just received a new lab oven that calls for 415V 60HZ 3 phase @ 45KW, the problem is that we only have 120/208Y available to us ( plenty of unused service). Question: Do I source a transformer or look into converting oven to run on 80A 208y?

Hi Dargo,

Sounds like your either from US or Canada with voltages your quoting maybe an idea to find a site on that side of the pond rather than this one which is based in the UK.

hi dargo,

in my opinion it wont be possible to run your oven at a lower voltag without damaging it.

think of ohms law.

the resistance of the elements are fixed.

you intend on lowering the voltage, which means that the current must rise to maintain its power output.

this means that the elements will overheat and burn.

We also encounter similar problems sometimes with imported equipment and it's a -----up. Some equipment it's cheaper to replace components such as heating elements or motors and use a small transformer for the controls and PLC's etc and with other equipment it's more practical to just use a transformer set to achieve the correct supply voltage. 45KW is going to need a convincing transformer so it would be worth doing some investigation into replacing heating elements first.

thank you all for your input, we have opted to go the transformer Route. Turns out that when we reviewed our specs on the order, we ordered the oven to run on the lower voltage. Since it's cost prohibitive for the vendor to absorb the shipping costs back and forth to China for a rewire, they're covering the cost of the transformer including installation... thanks again!

FYI ... electricity is as universal a language as mathematics, it doesn't matter whether the site your on is on some side of whatever pond so long as your not in it! grow a little global...

Not quite sure where your attitude comes from and quite correct that mathematics is global, unfortunately regulations and installation procedures regarding other countries electical systems isn't.

Ian is a respected member of our forum and IMO his advice did not warrent the obvious sarcasm in your reply ................I do hope that perhaps if you want to seek advice again that a little common civility is shown

Malcolmsanford, I apologize for your perception of my reply to Ian, I meant no ill will, only to make light out the substance of my question. I did not inquire about regulations or local installation procedures, only about a choice based on best practices and expertise yet was greeted with a response tantamount to “Yankee go home…” . I’m sure that Ian probably meant to be helpful but it did not give that impression. I am sure you can understand. Enough said, sorry if it came across "sarcasm".
