How does this course sound? Im a little stuck

Hi everyone.

Just joined the forum and doing a bit of research and decided to leave a post.

I am 19 and want to become an electrician. Today i went to an interview at the Building Trade Skills Centre (BTSC) in Chessington. I haven't found it mentioned on this forum and was wondering if anyone had heard of it or been on it, as i would like to know what it is like.

Anyway the interview was more of a 'sales pitch' with the odd question but over all it did sound really good and he did sell it to me.

The course covers C&G 2330 level 2 and 3 and also 17th Edition Regs 2382 and Inspection and Testing 2392. These are completed in 12 1 week modules.

Once you have passed this they assist you in a job placement and I am told that 100% of their fully qualified trainees have been placed in jobs.

He showed me around there facilities which look really great, tools are provided and from what he told me sounds like it would suit me.

All of the above is included in the price apart from overalls and a some books but before I depart with a good looking £8000 I want get some advice from others who have done something similiar or have some experience in the trade.

I've just done the 2330 Level 2, and the 2392 2382 at a local college. 2.5 days a week.

I did consider - and sounds like I had the same sales job - one of the private courses but really pleased I didn't (not just because it cost about £1k versus £8k).

I can't comment on their course but I can say

1. it was good to take in the rudiments over a longer period of time to let key facts sink in
2. it wasn't overly complicated but have something explained by a tutor was - for me - really important. Reading the books alone would have been really tough.
3. the tutors really looked after the class, as students and not fee-payers. We had load of times to talk around the key facts with no pressure to fit it in a shorter period.

I'm a bit older(43) and had the luxury of time - but I'd recommend a trad college (at an eight of the price) over a super quick appraoch.

As mentioned £8k is a bit steep.
I did the 2330 at my local college which cost around £2k over 3 years, again including use of tools (colleges seem to get free or discounted tools from the likes of CK in return for advertising space).

Is that 12 weeks for the whole lot!?
What I found was just about anyone could pass the exams and get the bits of paper, probably in a much shorter time than 3 years, but if you don't actually understand it there's no point.

The two issues I can see are....1. £8K is ridiculous and 2. 12 weeks is also ridiculous.

I dont think even Steven Hawking could absorb all that info in that short space of time.

Sorry but if it sounds too good to be true then it probably is! I would also be wary of statistics like the "100% of their fully qualified trainees have been placed in jobs"

This could be 1) very few pass
2) you are not "fully qualified" (no nvq L3) at the end of the course
3) They offer you some temp work at the other end of the country ...

I think if you get many replies the vast majority will favour the college route, slower, cheaper and more time to gain a proper understanding with lecturers who are concerned about you passing rather than have you got the money!

Wow 12 weeks to become an electrician does this mean the end of 4 year apprenticeships?

If you start the 2330 level 2 this year at college for around 1k per term then you should tranfer over to the 2357 next year and there may be some funding back in the pot too. If not complete year 2 for another 1k.

This way you will absorb all the info save money and keep your options open, remember the qualification is changing and as stated 12 weeks to take in 3 years of studying is crazy in my opinion and any reputable company will pick a time served man over a' boil in the bag spark' every time
