Hi All

I hope someone can answer this
im an electrician at the moment doing domestic and commercial properties, i now want to also train as an auto electrician, but i cant seem to find a course in or around Birmingham that is just auto electrics.

does anyone know of any? and also what is the best route into the auto electrician industry? what qualifications do you need?

Hi dude,I think it unlikely that there will be one course, that covers ALL the aspects of that trade. There will be electronics, diagnostics, and courses of a more general nature.
Most of the concentrated units, will be specific to manufacturer,or more often these days, individual models.
The most capable lads,in this area, and there are not many, have usually done the "round",including LOTS of varied involvement,in their own time.
I get involved with a lot of machine/equipment/plant repairs, where AC,DC,Canbus,electronic/pneumatic/hydraulic operations, all work together (or not!), and you have to draw from a dozen previous experiences,to have an overview of what may be occurring.
Now,to teach someone ALL the different aspects of one piece of kit,be it plant, commercial or vehicular, would probably best be served by the manufacturer of that particular item......then tomorrow,it's a different one.....

I suppose you best start with deciding if specialising is where you want to begin, then choosing a "marque",adding additional knowledge as you go.

If it is,as a "general" auto electrician, then you need to start ripping in to as many vehicles as possible!

For example, knowing how to test, examine results, wield an oscilloscope etc, will be NO help,if you do not know how to expertly remove 2 acres of trim and ancillaries,in Mr Jones's new Rangerover...AND fit it back like new!
I hope i have not disheartened you,but some of the tasks in the career you seek, make domestic AC work, look VERY relaxing. Good luck :icon12:

I particularly like the usage of 'AC' at the end there! :smilielol5:
...mmm sometimes my descriptions, when compressed, waver between my journalist parents upbringing, and my Gypsy pals influences... I was certainly not denigrating domestic electrical work, with my statement!
I was merely trying to prepare him,for working on equipment, should he progress from the "auto" side,to larger kit, where the wiring diagrams, may be spread over 4 or 5 A0 sized sheets, where by the average domestic drawings, may be done on 1 A4!

Anywho...off to finish a job,where the company technician,had been struggling with,for a few days. I got a call to go in,company lad was not too chuffed,sat on my shoulder all day,bit prickly...."already did that,checked that,swapped that...etc" Finally got to the bottom of it 6pm last evening,and it had 3 problems...one he'd fixed,one he'd caused,and one he'd missed! ....:icon12:
