Blood donors.

I've never had a problem before, but today my iron count was low.
I think the nurse used the wrong finger personally. Count was 132, cutoff is 135. So a fail.

They had to take a sample out my "other" arm to test again. came in at 148. much better.

That's 45 donations since 2007. They lost my records when I moved from Dundee, so its well over 50 I reckon.

"Are you allergic to plasters"
"I hope not... I'm covered in them today"

If you can give blood... do!.
I would give as often as possible but i'm tied to when the mobile unit is in my locality. You or someone you know may need it sometime.

"A pint?... A pint!!….. That's nearly a ruddy armful!"

I gave blood when I lived up Newcastle regular.

Moved south Devon and tried 3 times before giving up. Each time I got the letter through to give blood I would turn up and be told there is a 3 hour wait.

Surely if there is that many people wanting to give blood put more donation dates on or more beds.

It’s as if the south west doesn’t need it.

The mobile unit must have been short of staff. There were plenty beds free, but a queue at the door. I was there at 1:45 and was about 10 back at the door.
10:30 til 12:30, then 2pm til 4. Same again tomorrow.
They should really extend the times I think.

Don’t follow. If I’m thinking of giving blood, what are the inconveniences?

I'm guessing this was your Hb levels (Haemaglobin). From what I remember <100 is classed as anaemic and you start to worry. 132 is normal and healthy, I expect it just has to be above a set figure as it's going to drop after you've given blood.

If you're thinking of giving blood... you should, if you can. (I am in no way criticising people who don't give blood. Its not for everyone)
There is no inconvenience, if you can put by a couple of hours.
I was commenting on the fact that there was a long queue of people waiting to be processed, and plenty of free beds... but not enough nurses or staff to handle them all.

Well done you’ve made me feel guilty. I will try again.

I genuinely want to do this.

I’ve just gone on line and registered and the next available appointment is 29 th January at 1.40 pm.

I haven’t booked it because I cannot book that far ahead, as I don’t know what I will be doing then or where I will be.

There was a choice of 4 venues in this area with over 12 days to choose from between now and then, but they are all fully booked.

They don’t want my blood.

I used to do it regularly... but not for years... this thread is a good prompt !

I used to like to race it... Squeeze that ball/roller thing to fill up that bag as quick as possible !

When my daughter started going, I told her to see if she was as quick as me.. (needle in to needle out in 7 minutes!)
We were on beds a few feet from each other... and when I told her to time it, I was told "It's not a race, you know!" by one of the nurses.

That was me put in my place.

I don't know if its any different down south, but the Scottish mobile unit feeds you tunnocks caramel wafers afterwards

One of my workmates had a similar "Rejection" ,
I made sure I had a bit of extra iron the week before , if not stuffing my self full of greens / red-meat !
(If you have a woman in the house they usually have Iron tablets .. but they definitely are an Eye "bulger" when it comes to causing constipation , cool mints at the ready boys !) ... I hate needles and seeing Blood but gave 4x when convenient(Gang/pack assisted).

I always thought that Guinness was a great source of iron... if I'm wrong... please don't tell me...

I do hope that Mrs Telectrix doesn't suffer too much with all those sprouts you're eating...

warms the bed on a cold night. anyway, can always blame the dog.

Too right. Good old Raleigh bicycles had great brakes that hardly ever used to break! ;)

1960s and 70’s cars used to fall apart after a few years. Current cars seen to go on for about 3 or 4 times longer before things start breaking. 40 years ago we could fix things more easily, now days you need much more specialist kit. Swings and round shouts me thinks. What proportion of average income is a car / washing machine now compared to 40 years ago?
