Well looking for help again.Got asked to have a look at an immersion heater that trips the rcd as soon as it reaches set temp. This can be set at 50 degrees to 90 but as soon as it gets to the temp off goes the rcd.Have cheaked ir on cables back to board no problems, restance of dual elements 1 8 ohms and 35 .4 core heat resestant flex from heater switch to immersion heater, wired as gn/ye to earth blue to thermostat blaclk to bath element brown to sink element. Have cheaked thermostat is switching at different temp. Any more ideas as to problem. Thanks

As the immersion is heating up the element is going down to earth, remove the flex, crack the immersion with big spanner and hammer, drain the cylinder and install a new element.

Would it be worth swopping out the stat first, just in case it is that, which is making the rcd trip.
Perhaps as it reaches temp and switches, a small fault current is going to earth as the contacts open?
It is the only moving part after all...

Just a thought.

I'd go with GT1 first....you say it doesnt matter what temp the stat is set at as soon as it switches off it trips the RCD?? is that right?
,whatever, changing the stat first is a lot less hassle than changing the element if you are not sure where the problem lies.

possibly the immerser heating up and a split opening and causing short to earth Test with everything till your blue in the face you will not find it as by the time it cools down the split will close

Yep i agree with the other guys , one thing have you ever changed an immersion heater before if not be carefull ,when you remove the element as you could damage the tank ,last thing you want is to flood the house , if any doubt call for the assistance of a plumber

if you drain off the tank until its about 2/3 full break the seal on the immersion don't fully unscrew it, then carry on with the drain down then complete unscrewing the element. If the tank is totally empty it's easier to tear the tank :D

Thanks for the advice. Changed the termostat still the same problem as soon as it reaches any temp you set rcd trips so now waiting for plumber to change element and will then go back to re connect.

You are missing a good sales opportunity by letting a plumber change the element, they are easy and risk free to do if done correctly, I have literally changed 1000's over the years and never has a problem, floods and buckled tanks etc are common with inexperienced users but really if you do it correctly they are profitable jobs, don't pay the plumber get you own feet wet and learn.:D

how stuck/ corroded do the elements get? ie is a sharp wack on the spanner enough to loosen them or do they occasionally need something else as well (wd40 or the like, just remember to wipe clean before contaminating the water).

never done one before but have to do one in a few weeks time.

thanks
