Hi all, here is an update.
I've changed the cable to 3093Y and used bootlace ferrules on the ends.
This is what the old cable looks like:

Any chance of a close up of the cut ends?

Im wondering if that is tinned copper, aluminium or bycicle brake cable some one has insulated and sheathed.
