I have just completed a 4o kw install and I have been told that an import/export needs to be fitted as well as the generation meter. Is this in place of the existing import meter and if so is it down to me or the energy supplier to fit it?

4kw or 40kW?

you need an export meter fitted if 40kW, whether this is an import export meter to replace the existing meter or an additional export meter with it's own MPAN is between you and the electricity companies who own the import meter, but I believe it's usually a separate meter.

Thanks Gavin
So if I fit an Export meter(i assume this is a standard meter, wired in reverse) it would be placed on the domestic side of the import meter?
and how do i go about obtaining an mpan for it?

In many cases the income from export won't cover the standing charge for the export meter, best to check how much a customer will be exporting.

Not sure if you have sorted this yet as the export capacity is >30KW you will require a half hourly meter to record electricity exported. You will rerquire an MPAN for the export this would be generated by the Distribution Network Operaror (DNO) once you have this MPAN you can approach an electricity supplier to but back the exported electricity, you will also require a meter opertor contract with a meter opertor for the half hourly meter.
Depending on several factors will determine whether a seperate meter is installed or one meter to register iimport / export
