there must be a sensor to detect the water. Can you get to it to see if it’s dirty or blocked somehow.

thanks. sounds logical, Jim. advice passed on.Had the same problem on my hotpoint a few weeks ago, fluff from the condenser was in the pump bowl at the back of the machine causing the float to get stuck.
Watching this eSpares video is easier than trying to describe how to get the cover off, but he should only have to take the top white cover off to clear out the chamber.
from waht he tells me, seems like the water is not getting to the tank and so is backing up and activating the float. told him to check for blocked pipe/s.

edit, just looked it up and it's to do with a faulty door catch. don't think it applies in this case.
