We have often discussed the innards of a smart meter on here and what they can and can't do. this video by bigclive might be of interest to a few on here.
Its not exactly the done thing to go and poke about your own.

The bit at the start showing the contacts that detect if the covers removed are of interest if you are working on the tails.

Given the install locations, I'm very surprised on their choice of detection method. Those carbon based switches can go for years but they can also fail rapidly if the environmental conditions are right and obviously when they fail they go open circuit so not only have you got the terminal cover off but you've also ripped the modem cover off for good measure... visit from the supplier heavies ensues ;)
 
Lets be honest if you are really looking to pilfer your electric supply or run a grow house you are just going to pull the fuse and run a feed bypassing the meter courtesy of some henleys. you might still use the metered feed for generic sockets and lights etc to avoid suspicion. Why over complicate things with worrying about sensors in the meter
