Hi,

I recently purchased this extension lead (not sure if im allowed to post links or not, apologies if not allowed):
Masterplug Surge Protected 2m 4 Gang Extension Lead

The wall socket is behind a wardrobe so access to turn off the extension lead is very difficult. I know the extension lead is still consuming electricity when no devices are plugged in as the "power" and "surge" lights are on so I wanted to fit an in-line switch on the lead which allows me to turn it off when no plugs are in use. Is this possible and is anyone kind enough to direct me to where I can purchase such an item?

Thanks in advance

The power consumed by the LEDs is tiny, probably well under 1W. In the 5 years "off" life you might get out of the block that would come to under 45kWh and at current prices that is under £6. I doubt the saving in electric would pay for a switch!

The second problem you will find is most in-line switches are only rated at a few amps for use with lights and similar. You would need one rated at 13A and with space for the earth wire to be joined as well. Probably your best plan if you want to add a switch (but it is not very cheap or pretty) would be to use a 20A switch with box such as this:

And some cable glands to grip the cable where it enters and exits:

But at that point you might be cheaper and safer simply to but a strip that has an on/off switch already!

If it is your property and there is a lack of sockets in sensible places then it would be worth getting a sparky in to add a couple where you want them. Not as cheap as the power strip, but a lot better in the long run in terms of ease of use, safety, and ultimate resale value of the property. Of course, if rented then you don't have that option without getting the landlord involved.
