Hi,ard

I wondered if someone could give me a bit of advice please?

I'm fitting an electric hob to replace my old gas hob, which is fitted above an electric double oven.

The oven is hard-wired to a connection point behind it on the wall. This is fed from a standard cooker switch on the wall above with integral electrical socket. The cooker switch seems to have 6mm 2+E fed from a cooker circuit in my distribution box protected with a B32a mcb. The same type of wire then feeds the connection point at the back of the oven.

The current gas hob is hard-wired into a 3a fused connection point beside the oven connection point. This is powered from a multi-appliance panel itself powered from the standard downstairs sockets circuit protected with a B32a mcb.

Naturally, the existing hob point is not appropriate to run my new electric hob.

So in order to connect the new hob (6500w), should I:

- run a second connection from the cooker switch down to a new connection point mounted beside the existing oven connection, or

- change the existing oven connection box to a twin appliance connection box and connect the hob to that?

In either event, should I change the cooker B32 mcb in my distribution box to a 45a mcb?

Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

Paul you aren't an Electrician are you?

Hi Pete,

No, I'm not an electrician. Car mechanic initially. However, I'm reasonably competent and pretty safety-conscious.

Paul
then go by my post#2.it's not rocket science. basic competence will do.

Wilko,

yes, I have a variety of insulation, continuity and voltage testers. I might even still have some neon screwdrivers (which I won't be using).

Paul
shirley, you can use them for some terminations and to stir your tea/coffee.

telectrix,

Tks for your feedback. So even if I had both ovens going and all 4 rings are on the hob, do the diversity factors mean that my 32mcb can handle it?

Paul
yes. as the 32A MCB is rated to protect a 6.0mm cable, the worst that could happen is that the MCB tripped occasionally.
