I'm putting a lot of LED downlighters in various rooms in my house. What are you meant to do the long metal strip that's attached to the bulb holder?

Welcome to the forum.

I think you may be referring to the strip of metal that is intended to hold the terminals junction box away from the downlight to prevent the terminals from overheating.

It clips onto where the spring is as RB says. They are usually a bit naff though and can come off easily.
