O

ojbor

please could anybody explain why I am getting a high insulation test live to earth on a chandelier with 7 of the above lamps in when a lamp is removed the reading improves by 2 m ohms for each one.

Can understand your reason for dead testing, with lamps still installed....But the answer your question, Read up on resistors in series and parallel.

Thanks Tazz a workmate of mine asked me this question and don't know why he was dead testing the fitting with the lamps in but he did anyway. He was happy with the readings on the circuit minus lamps about 300 meg ohms but was interested as to reasons for the readings live to earth through the lamps and I couldn't explain. Still cant but will check up on resistors in parallel

so that's well over the "pass" value of 1 MΩ. why bother further?

don't mention dribbling. we're all getting older daily. :ack2:

I'm developing a re-circ drip tray to hang around my neck, like those baby ones.
Or a more advanced version where the catchment area will plug straight into the stomach.

Does anybody actually know the answer to my query I could understand the explanation of resistors in parallel if the reading was live to neutral but why live to earth ?

what type of lamps are fitted? and what base configuration?

and 7 equal resistances in parallel will give a combined resistance of 1/7 of each.

Html an

so test from the L or N terminal to the BC base on each lamp ( with the lamp out ). see if you get a reading.

the reading is through the lamp to earth ( some people call lamps bulbs ) ie with all the lamps in and testing between L and cpc at the fitting

...If i have read and calculated correctly, those figures put the initial test, with no lamps,at 30 meg ohms,so hardly a stella score to start with.Although, perfectly acceptable. Can the OP give any details of construction, age and design of fitting?

Is is new fitting with all the lampholders wired seperatly back to the centre rose in 3 core flex. My question is why is there reading from live to earth through a new 52 w halogen type lamp. Am I not making myself clear or does nobody on here know the answer if that is the case I will endeavour to explore other avenues instead. Thankyou

What are the Earthing arrangements and was the Neutral still connected at the CU?

It sounds like the insulation in the lamp caps is poor, between the contact pips and the metal cap itself. This is not uncommon, I have had lamp caps read lower than the whole of the rest of the installation combined. If the lamps have been on, and hence warm, for a while, it probably isn't going to get any higher. But it doesn't sound like it's a problem, except that you have to take the lamps out to get a realistic test result on the wiring.
