Hi just after a little bit of advice the ceiling light in our spare room seems to have a mind of its own it rarely comes on if the switch is operated but if left on the light will come on eventually it then works fine for a short period so it will switch on and off but then it decides to stop again we have replaced the switch and the ceiling rose but the problem is still there the fact the light does come on surgests that there is no brake in the curcit but or maybe not? Any help would be greatly appreciated than you in advance

Hi Brian and welcome to the Forum :) .

It does sound like you've got a loose connection somewhere in that circuit. Is this the only light that has the problem?
Circuits sometimes have junctions "concealed" in the ceiling space and these sometimes become unreliable with age and can cause problems. They can be tough to find without test kit and experience.

Thank you for your reply yes this is the only room that seems to be affected and will have a quick look in loft see if anything jumps out I have no problem getting an expert in but was unsure how big a job it could be and expense!!

whereabouts in Lancashire? i cover up to south side of preston.

I'll assume you've check the lamp in another lamp holder, or a new lamp in that lamp holder.

In which case it sounds like maybe a connection issue, as Wilko suggested. Possibly at the previous fitting electrically. Possibly a junction in the loft. Might be in the live connection, might be in the neutral. And as mentioned, harder to find without test gear.

Maybe a little bit more than annoying as loose connections do have the potential to start a fire due to arcing. I would say get it checked out. Cost wise a bright electrician should not take more than an hour to find the fault and fix. Maybe a call out fee varying from £50-£120. What price safety huh?
