Next question is why are you wanting to carry out an IR on a fitting, unless you suspect it is faulty, or are you trying to prove it is class II

If your carrying out an IR on the fixed installation then you should have a read of Reg 412.2.3.2

thanks for that about the reg 412.2.3.2 I was thinking did I have to do the between conductors and earth test if the fittings were class 2

Yes the one part of the IR test be it the normal one at 500V DC or the one highlighted in Regulation 612.3.2 where you use 250V DC is that you need to do it between the LIVE/EARTH.

If you trying tp prove the continuity of the earth, then you may have to take the fitting down as there could be a good chance that the CPC is "tucked" up somewhere. Personally on all class II type luminaires I would try and bring the CPC to somewhere inside the fitting, a tester may have to dismantle the unit be they would find the CPC in it, of course you may not be so lucky.

Are you really wanting to test the fitting or are you just talking about testing the circuit up to the fitting?

If it it is the second then it is just like any IR test.

If the fitting is inaccessible, so can't disconnect live conductors, then just test between live conductors (in one croc) and cpc in the other croc. Reg 612.3.3 :)

As Malcolm said there should be a cpc up to the fitting.

yes i just wanted to confirmd that you would do the IR test between live conductors and earth on class 2 circuit which you should i guess because we are really testing the cables and the regs state class 2 equipment must have a earthing conductor
