Hi all,

I am looking to add 2 spurs off a ring main socket and the 1st is a 3 gang socket with a 13A fuse (see pic). The 2nd will be 2 gang. Will I still require a seperate FCU or will the 3 gang socket fuse cover this requirement? I beleive it will but just want confirmation. Thanks.

The fuse in the 3g socket protects the third socket, this is a workaround to satisfy British standards.

The fuse doesn't protect outgoing cables.

So if these new sockets are all to be connected to the same spur then they would all need to be connected via a 13A FCU or SFCU.

I thought this may be the case too. I found it on Screwfix and on the Q&A section a member of staff replied that the 13A fuse protects all 3 gangs MK Logic Plus 13A 3-Gang DP Switched Plug Socket White - https://www.screwflix..com/p/mk-logic-plus-13a-3-gang-dp-switched-plug-socket-white/17315#product_additional_details_container

To play it safe I'll just stick an FCU in.

I have just checked and indeed it does protect all 3 outlets, but that doesn't change anything as far as spurs go.
If you are putting 2x points on a spur from a ring then it needs to be a fused spur.

You are only permitted one point on an unused spur, the triple socket is one point, a twin socket is one point.

Thanks for all your help Dave, much appreciated. I'll grab an FCU for it.

Just for information I found the above Interesting, in the latest update of the French regulations a three gang socket counts as three points etc, it was a significant change as being all radial circuits for power outlets the maximum of 12 sockets on a 2.5mm circuit and 8 sockets on a 1.5mm circuit suddenly lots of installations do not comply with the latest Regulations, not that they are retrospective of course.

Given the lack of fused plugs, etc, in that system it seems a massive oversight not to count each connectible point individually in the first place!

But lets keep the ring/radial/etc debate to the threads for that topic!
