Hi all! My first post here.

I've worked for the same big company for many years now. Started as an apprentice.

Now I'm fed up with the company and wouldn't mind a bit more pay.

I'm only contracted to 37 hours a week and get no chance of overtime.

i have a mortgage so would worry a bit about leaving a steady job.
But is there decent money to be earnt working through agencies?

i don't know anyone whose done this so any info on working through an agency would be good.

i know it's a bit of a vague question but appreciate any comments. Thank you!

agency work is not the best but needs must many lads would prefare to be cards in but if your after chasing the money and longer hours as long as you get on the right jobs you can earn more money good luck its tough out there but youll survive

Had a bad experience with an agency doing IA services, took out a CCJ and only got half of what they owed us, so if you go that route be careful, keep meticulous details and records, and if you can get the customer to sign to say you have visited.

My advice is to go on the 20% deduction scheme and ring around all the large local companies with your details. When they get busy you will be contacted, you will make money this way and if you are good they will end up giving you work very regularly, if you get 2-3 companies who like you then I bet you will get 40-45 weeks a year and you will rake it in.

I made more money sub contracting than being employed, you only need your own kit and a vehicle, you need to be able to invoice them and put your UTR number on the invoice and you are away, best of luck, don't look back look forwards.

It's swings and roundabouts - yes you can earn a higher rate per hour and on some jobs you can get loads of hours in, but you never know where the next job is coming from. You might have a really good few months, and then spend the next few sitting at home watching cash in the attic and spending the extra you earned, plus worrying about when the next payday will be.
Great if you can get work subbying directly for contractors, but most if not all agencies will want you to work under an umbrella scheme, where they shaft you every week - they sub you out for something like £22/hr and pay you £14, then the umbrella company charge you about a tenner a week for the luxury of getting paid.

you nee to sign on with the respectable agencies. meridian, hays, ruillion, rimington booth. several others that specialise in trades rather than secretarial etc.

Right now is not a good time to go agency.
The Umbrella schemes charge around £20, but the worst part, is that Agencies are only paying PAYE.
This entails you paying the Employer's NI contribution.
Somewhere between £70 to £150 a week worse off than through the CIS scheme.

You will be lucky to be offered more than £750 per week.
That's £15 an hour for 10 hours.
Many will only want to pay 9 hours.
Obviously, it's all before tax and NI etc.
