Can any of my fellow sparkys give me some tips to impress.
I am only just into my second year of a two year level 2 course but have learnt, all single two and three core installations using 1.5, 2.5 and 4mm cabling have done plastic and metal conduit, sockets with fused spurs and even swa mineral and fire cable. But no one wants to hire me as an electrcians mate. Any tips given would be greatly GREATLY appreciated.

Be honest its always best but don't take it as far as I did lol I had a mate that had worked for the local council for years and had heard so many stories from him so when he left I applied for his job just for a laugh. In the interview I was asked if I understood about not being able to discuss council issues out side of work and this was my reply " you mean when you make a compleat and utter balls of something I can't talk about it ? You mean I have to come here work and watch you lot f... Everything you touch and say nothing yes like I would do that you guys are the biggest joke in the county I am here to get stories for Saturday nights if you think I am here for the work your mistaken I know how you treated the last guy. Then I got up and walked out.

So don't try it this way but do be truthful and show your enthusiasm and god luck.

  • Do your research about the company. At least read through their website. If the website has the names and pictures of key people, memorise them and only if you get the chance to, be the first to introduce yourself "Thank you for seeing me Mr____ , My name is_____." Drop his name in once or twice in the interview - no more than that.
  • Dress traditional smart casual no conspicuous logos. Avoid face jewellery and strong aftershave.
  • Have a second hobby if yours is watching the match, Xbox, socialising or listening to music. Preferably something technical or creative that requires dexterity.
  • Don't try to bull your way through a technical question you don't know the answer to. Say "I don't know, but I would guess it has something to do with...."
  • Don't claim any experience or achievements in your CV that you can't accurately talk about in detail or substantiate.
  • Showing confidence in selling yourself is great but don't overdo it.
  • If you sit there and say nothing or the bare minimum, you won't get the job. If you are nervous, remember that, if you get the job, you did well, if you don't get the job, it's unlikely that you will ever meet them again and they probably won't remember you anyway. You have nothing to lose so pause, take a deep breath and go for it.
  • Some interviewers use a scoring system such as local authorities, others like lord Sugar go on impressions. Some use keywords in their scoring. For example, if you are talking about SWA, they may want to actually hear you say the works "Gland" "Banjo" "Cleat" etc. Saying "Yes, I can install SWA" is sometimes not enough if the question is "Tell me about installing SWA"
  • Listen carefully to each question. Be sure you fully understand it before answering. Ask them to repeat it if necessary.
  • If you feel you have drifted off topic or lost your thread, apologise and ask them to repeat the question.

Among other general questions, you may be asked, fairly or unfairly, questions like:

  • Do you have any questions? Prepare at least one that is relevant and not about time off, bonuses, or other optional benefits unless they were already mentioned but unclear in the interview or job description.
  • Why do you want to work with our company in particular?
  • Where do you see yourself in 5/10 years?
  • Why did you choose to work in the electrical industry?
  • What qualities can you bring to our company?
  • How would you describe yourself to someone else?
  • What are you best attributes?
  • What are your weaknesses?
  • What impression do you think other people have of you.
They may also ask your about your understanding of commercial confidentiality, security, diversity, equality and health and safety.

That's all I can think of for now
I hope it helps
Good luck

(that so didnt happen)

If you don't know an answer to a question, be honest and say so. Nothing more embarrassing than listening to someone waffle on about a subject they know nothing about.
