Hi guys,

I’m new to this forum game and what I basically need to know and can’t find any info on myself is what defines an electrician from a junior electrician?

I passed my AM2 in May last year and everybody else who was on my course that has stayed in the electrical game that is seems to be getting payed more than me, when i got onto my employer about this he’s stated that I’m trying to run before I can walk and that your still classed as a junior electrician for years after completing your lvl 3. Now I know that I don’t know everything there is to know about electrics and I will never claim to as there is always room for improvement and you never stop learning but surely I didn’t go to college for 5 years to still be on a basic wage.

Any info on this subject would be greatly appreciated as I feel I can’t fight my corner without the proper information.

Thanks,

Luke.

you need to look on the JIB site to see what rate is appropriate for your level of training/experience.

Is your level 3 the theory part like the C&G 2365 or such or an NVQ? If you have enough to get a JIB gold card then you should be on rates that match. If you don't have your NVQ lv3 then get it finished pronto if you want to bargain hard (which means having another job lined up so you are ready to walk out the door if you don't get your pay increase).

If you've finished ALL of your apprenticeship you should have a final certificate to say so. Only from personal experience but as soon as I had mine I went to my boss and asked for the proper rate. Have to say though the am2 alone doesn't necessarily mean the apprenticeship is totally complete that depends if you've done all the other bits.
