They could offset it via tax breaks or whatnot, it's not going to be the terrible thing it's appears in print.

What's the point in that? They'd be giving them back the same amount of money in tax breaks that they have taken from them? They might as well just collect the tax money and not cause the massive uproar.

All it would do is cost the government more money in administration than they would actually gain.

I would hope emergency legislation is put in place forcing bonuses etc to be diverted to a central pot, they can do such a thing, they just need the spine and balls to do it.

The spine and balls to shoot yourself in the foot isn't very intelligent.
