My 88 year old mum needs new lighting in her very small open plan kitchen. They've just built a house next to hers and the daylight is much diminished in her kitchen and adjoining dining table area. Can anyone recommend a good bright diffuse light for her kitchen ceiling? Would this light be a good choice? http://www.johnlewis.com/john-lewis-portella-led-flush-light-white/p2543403?navAction=jumplight
What is the maximum number of lumens I should look for, for a good bright kitchen light? She also needs improved under cupboard lighting for same kitchen. Thank you for help

Surely, if you need a good bright light, the question is 'What is the minimum lumen rating required?'.

Only you know the room.

A typical traditional 100W GLS 'bulb' gives out about 1300 lumens. A typical 5 foot fluorescent tube gives about 5000 lumens when new (the output reduces with age).

We have a 5 ft fluorescent in our kitchen and I wouldn't say that it's too bright.

I think your proposed light won't be enough for an elderly person needing good light levels even if you improve the under-cupboard lighting (which would be a good idea in any case).
