personally tried a few lasers. if other trades are on site, they'll get knocked over. esp if wet pants is there they get nicked. spreads will slop ther muck directly into the lens. sweeper up will get it covered in dust.

i use string. nobody to damage it, nobody will nick it, and you don't have to bugger off for batteries when they go flat.

If downlights and ceiling is going to be skimmed after then it's a chalk line all day long.

Think I'm going to get this. Bosch Quigo Self-Levelling Cross Line Red Beam Laser - https://www.NoLinkingToThis/p/bosch-quigo-self-levelling-cross-line-red-beam-laser/4708x Am I right in thinking it will throw a cross hair up onto the ceiling that I can align just by turning the level round on a flatish base and I won't need a tripod? Think it should save some time and get me more accuracy than very careful measuring and wobbly line marking which I've been relying on so far!

Forget red lasers, go for green. In summer you will be forever trying to cover up windows to block out light so you can seen the damn thing.

Its great as it will draw a cross on the wall, floor and ceiling. lots of mounting options in the kit too, mag mount, ceiling grid clamp etc. When it dies i'll get the green version.

If all you want is a straight line across the ceiling, or two lines at right angles, the Lidl one can be locked and laid on its back on the ground.

Be careful when doing that, if the ground is not flat the lines will not be a right angles to each other.

If ceiling is getting skimmed afterwards chalk line is by far the best way imo. Far too much faffing around with laser levels to do it and I have 2 of them including the one I linked to in post #3. If ceiling not getting skimmed then they are great, but go green. Nowt to do with energy saving, they are just so much easier to see. Have in the past had to try and cover up windows to see the red laser level line, never had to with green laser

I thought it through. I don't want disposable batteries and I did want to use it outside so a rechargable green line laser it was. I didn't want Chinese either so there you go!

Made a wasted trip in the snow to my local Lidl to try and find a £20 quid parkside laser. Looking online I'm not sure you can buy them anymore or if they are being made at all. Still think they have to be worth the money though.

The DeWalt works fine. I'm still getting to grips with it. Outside it marked a beautifully straight line for some conduit that I ran.

Inside for the downlights it was also useful. For instance in the kitchen I was able to run a series of spots perfectly in line with worktop.
What I haven't gotten to grips with is painting a perfect right angle on the ceiling. I have a gimble
with spirit level on my tripod. That's fine for most work. However I need to turn the gimble 90degrees upwards to get the cross on the ceiling. I can't seem to judge it by eye and the laser just keeps flashing to tell me it's not possible to self level. Maybe I need a different gimble, or maybe I just need to read the instructions?
Anyway it's a very robust but of kit and it's definitely handy. Just wondering if any other DeWalt tools will fit the small battery?

Hence the reason for my recommendation to get a laser level that projects a 360 degree line vertically, as well as horizontally.
