Hi

Customer wants a new light fitting in their cellar with battery back up - i.e. it runs off 230v and has a battery inside it in the event of power failure. Its not required to be on all the time.

Had a look at maintained and non maintained - having a senior moment - would either of these do the job?

Thanks

Not a bad price.... and you don't have to stick the "running man" labels on if you don't want.

These ones (if they're the same as Denmans, which being Denmans internet branch they should be)

You can operate in Maintained / Non Maintained and also like the OP wanted switch between the two. So you can turn the light off, but in a "power loss" situation the light will ALWAYS come. If it's already on it'll stay on.

if you have it as maintained, it will always be ON. you need to feed a 3core to the light. L/N and S/L. switch will turn light on/off. if the power fails the battery will switch in. you need to wire it as non-maintained

It will always come on if there is a power loss whether the light is switched on or off. The internal battery is only designed to last 3 hours, (you may get more than this). If the power has been off for more than 3 hours, say in the middle of the night for instance, the battery may be flat and the light won't be working when everyone wakes up in the morning.

So if I fit a "maintained" and connect the s/live to the unit only, it will be switched on and off by the switch. Silly question - without a permemant live how does it get charged? (or have I mistunderstood your answer?)

You need a permanent live whatever type you install, like you say to charge the battery.
With a maintained fitting you just add an extra switched live, using 3 core, which turns the light on and off.

You can also get Maintained units for standard fluorescent strips, and there are systems available that have a central battery system also to power them.
The latter may be a tad overkill for your installation though. I'd be more inclined, if the customer wants to be able to use them longer and on an irregular basis (i.e. doesn't want them just coming on and having no control), to install a LED lit, DC based system, from some lead acid batteries (but make sure they are ventilated properly) with a charging system.
