so im an apprentice electrician currently starting work on house sites , I have basic knowledge of house wiring and I just need refreshing on light switch connections for example: 5 cables at 1 switch for 2 2ways (3 1m , 2 3cores) also intermediates.

If you are looping at the switch then loop out to the next ,live to the light fitting , but your trainer must be Abel to show you this if you are a apprentice.

Hi 123bill, and welcome, are you currently undertaking any training c0urses? if yes you really should apply to Admin for access to trainee area, there you will find like minded people, training like yourself, where Mentors lurk ready and willing to help. Good luck

I'm not certain what you are asking here, are you asking how to connect connect 2 way and intermediate switching or how many conductors you need?

The question of how many cables is difficult to answer as it will vary from installation to installation and depend on whether or not you have single core and earth cable readily available.
If you are wiring three plate at the light then for a 'basic' circuit you will have a twin from the light to the switch and a three core from switch one to switch two. If adding a intermediate the three core will go from the first switch to the intermediate and then from there to the last switch.

If wiring the feeds at the switches then you will have a feed (twin) in and out (unless it's the last one on the circuit). then a twin to the light and a three core to the second switch. Intermediates are the same as above.

For a 2 gang 2 way switch, if the second switch is also a 2 gang switch operating the same two lights, you normally only need to link them with one 3 core and one twin. The two commons at the far end would be linked together and connected to the brown of the three core, this would be connected to permanent live at the first switch. The switched lives connect to the two commons of the first switch.

The important thing to become a good electrician is to learn how the circuit works and how to work out the best way to wire it for each installation. If you just learn by the number of cables needed and wire every installation the same you will find that in future your ability to do things like fault finding is seriously limited and you will ultimately struggle to get the better paid jobs.
