Discuss London rates for subcontractors? in the Australia area at ElectriciansForums.net

at least £25. sub-contract rate here is £16-£20.

Thanks for all the responses.

I've been out of the country for almost a year (travelling) and I am going through the process of becoming self employed. Im planning on becoming a LTD company (less danger) and registering for VAT as i will be subbing myself out to larger VAT registered contractors and plan to make many purchases in my first year.

I was unsure of how much to ask for when offering my services, i dont want to sell myself too cheap nor charge a fortune.

Evening all!

Looking for some advice, I work for myself as a sole trader and have been offered some work as Lead Electrician/ foreman running a project in Reading.

I have been offered £16.00 per hour, waiting on other details such as mileage rate, living away allowance etc.. All I know is they have said they will book a Travelodge.

Looking for advice whether this is a good rate and if possible a going rate on living away costs and fair mileage rates.

Cheers,

James

Going rates as per JIB ( Grades, wages & allowances for the Electrical Contracting Industry) are about 13.00 an hour and 16.00 an hour london rates. If you are a sub contractor you need to charge at leats 20-25 an hour to make it worth your while. Remember you have to pay your overheads as well. I believe that if you run a business you need to charge at least 25 an hour. The table below shows a quick calc I have done based on expenses and at 20 an hour you barely cover your costs and may as well be an employee.

Looking at a basic setup these are the cost you can incur running your own business and paying yourself 13.89 an hour:-

YearMonthWeekDayHour

Pay Yourself£25,000.00£2,083.33£520.83£104.17£13.89

Working Day = 7.5 hours normally£156.31

Cheers for the response lads,

My thoughts exactly, I have been self employed for over 5 years now makes you feel a little undervalued considering all of the grief with yearly assesments etc.. I was on more than £16.00 an hour as a Contracts Manager back in 2005. Think I need to be having a word, any other advice on working away allowance and expenses would be greatly received.

Cheers,

Incredible £16 per hour?? Wots that £100 per day, minus 20% equates to £80, minus con charge leaves £70, minus fuel leaves £60, minus parking don't bother, hey why not take up begging the pays better than a Jib spark in London …… wouldn't touch London for less than £180 per day plus fuel, parking& con charge… and stick the Jib rates up the nearest NVQ 3 sparks backside cos they'd probably enjoy it IMHO LOL & LMFAO & xxxx

The more and more I hear makes me think this company is taking the mick. £16.00 per hour what a joke! I will be having a word on the 2nd. I have been out of working away for a few years now so I don't know what the going rate is at the minute. I am a JIB Approved Spark and if I was to take this job on as foreman/lead spark I would be going back in time in terms of rate!!!!

I've been on my own for 6 years now and was subbing for 4 of them. I never charged less than 18 per hour and was 20 for the last two years as a minimum. That wasn't even in the smoke either. You need that money just for the costs that we incur.
Also I was never a day out of work.

I do a fair amount of work in london. I find people care more about how professional you look/act and your references, than cost a lot of the time. I aim to make at least £200 a day, and aim to charge about £250, any less than that it is too much hassle for the money. £16 per hour in London would barely put food on the table once you have added up all your expenses!

At £16.00 per hour, 8 hours (£128.00) a day for running a new Leisure centre install with maybe 7 -8 Electricians to organise. Somebody is taking the Micheal. I will be going to the company with atleast £20.00 per hour in mind plus living away expenses. More to the point what is a decent rate for this? I know he is booking and paying for a Travelodge type hotel.

Cheers,

James
