Discuss LV or Mains Downlights & GU10's banned? in the Australia area at ElectriciansForums.net

A friend wants to fit 10ish downlights in there ground floor kitchen (2 story house) and after some advice.

First of all is it better to fit LV or mains?

My mind says mains. Quicker install, no trasformers to mess about with and go faulty in the future.

Second questions will GU10's be banned in the future and if so are the low energy replacements any good or would the spacing of the lights have to be closer to compensate for the lower light levels?

Thanks,

Adam

hi and welcome adam
i would fit mains as you say less to go wrong
gu10 11w compact flu lamp are a good match for a 50w halogen (i have them) even if they do take a little while to get to full brightness
your only problem may be if you get a fire rated fitting for halogen lamp a compact flu will stick out i would get the fire rated fitting and flu lamp as a complete package
they cost more now but will save any later problems
spacings will be the same

(will 50w lamps be banned? we are led to belive so)

Thanks for the welcome and information you have confirmed what i had heard on the grape vine.

Will let them know ive seen quite a few flu fire rated downlights start to come on the market and yes they seem about 50% more expensive but still cheaper then replacing them in the near future.

Many Thanks

If I had the choice I would have low voltage, the light given out is much whiter and brighter, as for the lamps being banned, as with all these things it is not going to happen over night
