was called out to house earlier where couple had returned from holiday to find they had no power. on closer inspection I discovered that the main 80amp fuse had blown, no mcbs or rcds had tripped. any ideas ?

I have seen a main switch go due to the terminals in the cutout not being as tight as they should be, DNO came and rectified the fault, I got a head shake for cutting the seal.

I have had similar where the cables in the meter shorted across two phases and took out the fuses.

I also had one where the customer shorted a cable while changing the socket and the main fuse went before the 30A 3036.

I've had a couple of service head fuses blow, very random times as well as there was no reason for them to do so.
I agree with Murdoch, sometimes they just pop.... Get the fuse changed and job done!

get DNO to replace FOC and try and scrounge some seals at the same time.

Customer of mine had the main fuse blow due to a fault on a junction box this was followed by a smell of burning plastic didn't blow the consumer unit fuse
There could be a fault that has blown clear under fault conditions and taken the main fuse

At very high fault levels and a fault close to the consumer unit the main fuse could clear the fault because it takes a finite time for the contacts to move in the magnetic trip.
