If you came across the situation where you had to add a piece of cable because the cable you were dealing with was not long enough what would you use?
I have two options at the moment either dig the whole drive up and replace the entire cable lengths to some lights at the entrance to a property or add to the cable so they can be switched on/off where the owner wants.
What is your preferred method of permanently joining cables?
The joint will not be accessible once it is put in place.
Thanks.

If it is buried SWA then a torpedo joint.

I call them submarines, not sure of proper name but any wholesalers should have them, I think they are about £15 each.

As above, the torpedo joints which you fill with resin. If the joint will not be accessible in the future then I would leave a note somewhere detailing where the joint is in the driveway - maybe on the cert or DB. That way if there is a fault in the future you can start by digging there!

Underground joints are the best option.

Word of advise, make sure you are there to observe the back filling if it isn't carried out by yourself. And retest the cable once it's backfilled.

I had an occasion once where I had to extend an aluminium cable that had been damaged. I was concerned with the brittleness of the alli earthed sheathing, however the trench was to be filled up the following day when I was not on site. I measured the ze at the extended point prior to leaving. It was 0.46 prior to leaving, and over 600 after it was filled. I had to dig it back up and reconnect the earthing that had snapped from the force of the digger pushing the joint down.
