I had a customer (doctors) whose DB has an ELCB main switch which tripped over night causeing a fridge which is plugged into the ring main to be off and ruined various vaccines. Is there any way to have the fridge isolated from the ring main and ELCB other than install a garage unit RCD for the fridge on a single socket?

It may be a one off that the ELCB tripped but it costs hundreds of pounds to lose the fridge. Do any of you have experiences in ensuring electrical supplies are continued for medical situations?

a dedicated socket for the fridge can be installed without RCD protection as long as you run in surface cable. ( or if buried cables, enclose or protect as per 522.6.101.)

Unfortunately the ELCB is the main switch on the DB so if I branched off from the supply side of DB, the only protection is a 100A electricity suppliers fuse.

Wouldn't be connecting off live side of existing board. Best way is to replace existing with either a board with rcbos or a dual rcd high integrity board and install a new non rcd identified socket, wired surface so cable is not concealed.

Reg 411.3.3 allows another exception (no rcd) with a documented risk assessment, but I'd expect the previous suggestion is easier to achieve.
If it is a GP surgery, surely they should be considering their existing install in any case?

especially now that the NHS have told them to bin their socket covers.

In a surgery I visit a gu10 has been hanging out of the fitting for around two years now! I assume they have lost the clip lol. The lamp is still working too.
