Been on a job today and the set up is a TT, well at least supposed to be, its a small area on edge of Chippenham.
The guy who lives there had a rewire under the 16th edition, he has a 100mA rcd as the main switch with lights, freezer and outdoor lights on, then a 30mA covering everything else. Not sure why the install was put on a TT though, its a bodge job.
Since this was done back in 2006, the dno have been out and changed the cutout during 2012(they did the whole cul de sac i am told), leaving it as a TT, despite availability of PME. nobody noticed however that the original cowboy when installing the rod only decided to run the cable from the rod in to the house about 2 feet before joining it onto the gas pipe, another cable links the water to the gas pipe! there is then one 10mm cable bonding the gas pipe back to the consumer unit, a whole metre and a half above, so by bodging his work the 'electrician' saved about 4 metres of earth cable.
We called the DNO who about 2 hours later sent an engineer out and a few phone calls later confirmed cutout was good for pme and we are okay to connect up.
It makes you wonder if anybody pays attention anymore ?
Rather than installing a car charge point for a little nissan leaf, we are now going to be sorting out the consumer unit and bonding. and then getting round to the car charge point afterwards.which fortunately can go on the pme as the guys garage is wooden with no extraneous parts.
You would have thought as part of the cut out upgrade the dno engineer would have checked bonding etc.. afterall the consumer unit is directly above the gas and water cutouts in the hallway cupboard! with the service head right next to all this...

The DNO does seem to arrive quite quick when you give the customer the right words to say - I write a little speech out putting a few ‘umms’ and some ‘likes’ (being Bristol).
It seems like we should go house to house checking these things out - so many installs after years without checks are quite ‘shocking’ - still, I’m getting good at installing Rods now so I’m ready for the 18th - bring it on!

@Rpa07 I prefer the term, 'there be a gurt big flash in me fuse, that box thingy you provide that my electric comes outer'... that will get the dno out sharpish!
From what i gather the earth rod for new installations in the 18th should be knocked into the long grass, especially as they were apparently going to aim for a sub 20 ohm reading! bit optimistic i think that one. spoke to a bloke from elecsa / niceic who sat on one of the committees for the 18th when at alexandra palace for the electrical show. he couldnt confirm fully this was the case, but with a wink and nudge said he expects it to not be in the final version. which means in all likelihood the idiots will put it in.
