its all been decorated so i really dont want to make a mess, is there a mounting plate that can go on the dimmer to bring it out off the wall?

What I usually do if i find a plate won't go all the way down, is use sealer neatly round the edge of the plate. Once it's set it won't move.

I purchased a Dimmer the other week and a wall spacer was supplied with the switch, the dimmer was made by GET electrical also they make a retro fit dimmer which will fit in a 16mm deep box

just put in a deeper backbox...is easy enough to keep the surrounding plaster intact with some skillful drilling and chiselling. ;)
