I do recognise that archaic inertia return spring,set-up...cannot remember what off...could be british,Austin,Wolseley,Humber,maybe.

It's used,and someone has painted the spoons,off it...

Try the forums of our collecting folk,with the Lucas number,as a search.

Unlikely it's off a car because there's no solenoid built into it. More likely a boat or tractor or truck or something commercial. Also most car starter motors had 2 ears at the front with bolt holes in them for mounting.

After a bit of digging around I might be wrong. I know it's not identical but it looks very similar to this rotax unit that went on a 1923-1924 Sunbeam....

After a bit more scratching I think we might have a winner;

Actually not, the gear has a collar on it and your doesn't. Pretty damn close though....

Yeah we were thinking some sort of commercial/boat as its earth return, that 2nd picture does look awfully close to our starter but as you say the collar on the pinion is what sets it apart, i thought it wouldve been an older model than 47 - 53? either way we are getting close thank you for your help :) much appreciated.
