I am 27 and want to become an electrician. I have no work or other commitments so just want to get the appropriate qualifications as quickly as possible.

I have an uncle who should be able to get me work if I have my 2391.

Now i thought i had it all worked out in the 6 steps shown below:

1. EAL level 2 (part p)
2. Get 2382 17th regs
3. Then do 2391
4. Then get a job as an electrician’s m8
5. Then do my 2330 levels 2+3
6. and finally convert the 2330 to an NVQ level 3

Although I have no practical experience i have a degree in electronic engineering and have worked as a laminator (fibreglass). So i am confident I poses both the practical and academic skills. I have looked at the exam papers for both the 17th and 2391 and am confident i could pass them with a bit of studding. I am sure i will be able to pass the 2391 even, although I will try to get work once i have done steps 1 and 2.

Now I went to enrol on at a local college on a part p course only to be told the cores was cancelled and had been replaced with the 2392.
I was told the eight governing bodies no longer require part p for eligibility to join and that part p was being phased out.

There is also a 2392-10 and a 2392-20, what is the 2392 and what is the difference between the 2 flavours?

If I don’t do the ELA part p course and just the 17th, will i be able to join ELECSA, NICEIC or any of the other governing bodies and sign off my own work?

My apologies for the ramble but if anyone could answer my questions of offer some advice I would be very grateful.

ok EAL L2 is not being phased out (I hope not i have about 150 students currently enrolled to do it!), it has been upgraded to the 17th.

it has not been replaced by the 2392. The 2392 is about initial verification, you still need to design and install the circuit first! I run the 2392 ALONGSIDE the EAL course and the 17th edition.

There is only a 2392-10, 2392-20 does not exist (it was going to - for a very breif period last year) but they left it under its original name of 2391.

To join a competent persons scheme (with no other installation quals) you generally need the EAL L2 VRQ AND your C&G 2382-10 17th Edition. Note that there is no requirement to sit a course for the 17th, you can self study and do exam only if you wish.

Sorry Im confused, whats the "EAL L2 VRQ" does it have another name??

Thanks

Si.
