Hi, i was wondering if anybody could suggest any computer networking courses. i am a fully qualified electrician and would like to be able to offer networking as part of my service.
Thanks for any help or advice

As networking do you mean installing structured cabling or configuring/setting up networks ?

If you mean installing structured cabling there are many companies that do a City & guilds 3667.
It takes a week to do copper IE Cat 5E / Cat 6 this is unit 1 & 4, and another week if you want to do the fibre optic modules 2 & 3.
Both courses are about £1000
I have done both course's, very good.

There's also the NVQ level 2, think level 3 has been scrapped.

If you want to go down the setting up / configing side do the Comptia Network + course very good intro to networking.
And all the course content is free online, you only then pay about £150 for the exam.

Don't start with the CISCO CCNA, been doing mine for about 8 months now, got my exam next month. Driving me mad LOL.

If you need anymore info give us a shout mate

Oh yea forgot to say, if you going to get into this properly structured cabling testers are very expensive.
Cost about 4 grand for a fluke.

By tester I mean proper tester a TDR not a cheap mod tap with 8 lights on from ebay.
More companies / trusts now want printed out certification especially now more places want cat 6 installed to run gigabit Ethernet with VOIP etc etc.
So if you want to get work in hospitals, schools, councils etc you need one of these.

If you are just going to install CAT5E round the home for PC's, playstations etc you will be fine with with a mod tap & common sense.

The cheap mod taps on ebay are the equivalent of a spark rewiring a house and then going round with plug in tester and telling the client the wiring is fine.
