Hi everyone,

just joined the the forum and thought I’d introduce myself and say a little about my background.

I’ve been a Marine Engineer for the last 20 years after joining the army at 16 as an apprentice and was a chief engineer on a major army landing craft (before they got sold off).

loads of experience in the maritime world where it comes to electrical & mechanical maintenance and installations. Mainly working on generators, 3 phase supply & distribution. Transformers, 230v, 110v & 24vdc supply, distribution and fault finding / rectification of final services and equipment.

Now I’ve hit 40, the army have decided I’m too old and are putting me out to pasture.

To that end I'm aspiring to be an electrician in the civilian world and currently working towards AM2.

Welcome to the forum
I cant believe the army puts you out to pasture at 40, they are short of man power (and new recruits) and with the knowledge you have it is a blooming shame (hope you got a good sized pension out of them!)

Hello and welcome Mate, where were you posted during tour service time?

Thanks Pete,
Spent most of my time down on Southampton at 17 Port & Maritime Regt as that’s where most the boats are (were). Have been to quite a few other places on tour and different exercises though. Served out in Cyprus, Falkland Islands, Afghan, Sierra Leone.
All in all, I’ve enjoyed my time.

I know, you’d think they’d want to keep us with recruitment and retention the way it is, But that’s how it goes.
There’s a slim chance I may get asked to extend for a few years, but at present I’ve got to plan on being out in March and moving on with the next chapter of my life.
The pension will be decent when I get it thanks. ?

Welcome JBW.
My only Mil experience is that some kit runs at 400Hz or was that avionics !

Thanks mate. I’ve never came across anything running at that in my line of work, but I wouldn’t know anything about avionics either.

The majority of ours was 440V 3P @ 60Hz, that’d run all the big kit and heavy motors onboard.
