I had originally been asked to install a light in a small steel container, used as a tool store at a commercial premises. The container is situated outside, mounted on wooden sleepers on a concrete base. Its sandwiched between to large wooden sheds. The supply to the premises is PME. There is a distribution board fed from a sub main in the shed next door, which has bonding back to the intake.
I thought the best approach was to take the supply from a 16A 30mA rcbo in the shed consumer unit, via a fused spur and run a sheathed cable in plastic conduit, using plastic waterproof light fitting in the steel container, making it a double insulated installation, with no earth connection or bonding to the steel container.
However, the customer has now asked for a socket to be installed in the container, to enable charging of power tool batteries. Even though the socket would be a plastic outdoor type, I believe the regs. say that the installation cannot be class 2, if a socket is installed. Therefore would I have to earth and bond the steel container ? It is mounted on wooden sleepers, but the resistance between the steel container and the consumer unit inside the large shed next door measures approx. 12,000 ohms measured in damp conditions.
I would appreciate if anyone could give their opinion on this install. Thanks everyone.WTJ.
