Hi guys.

Got 2394/5 final written exam papers next tuesday and wednesday but already have a mate throwing me loads of work.

Got a customer that wants electric gates for their driveway, my mate has already arranging to source the gates that operate by a intercom from the house.

Without looking at the gate kit/instructions at this moment...

What cables will need to be required to run for a "run-of-the-mill" gate and intercom - would it be just power and a cat5 cable?
Is there any other factors I need to consider aswell other than maximum demand and cable length (volt drop)?

Please advise me it will be greatley appreciated.

Regards

Jamie.

Earth loop impedance.:smile5:

I'm assuming that sort of system would be intergrated in the gate kit itself (Please correct me if I am wrong). I'm just talking about how many cables will I need to rum from the house to the end of the drive?

You'd hope that the safety devices were built in, but not so long ago round here a little boy was killed in some gates that didn't stop closing, and as a result the spark who only put the supply in, the builder who only fitted the posts and the gate installer were all taken to court because of it and think they may have been prosecuted

It should be supplied, but you still have to fit it and connect it up, test it etc etc

The only way to know for sure what you need is to read the manual/spec for the system you are using.
Some of them need all manner of cables, others have a lot of wireless communications.
You'll need cables to the motors, sensors and anything else that is being fitted

I have just looked at similar threads and established the in depthness of the design of the gate and safety requirements and testing etc.

I'm going to get in touch with my mate to see what provisions have been made for the design, safety and suitebility of gate being sourced before I commit to this job. Because lets be honest my mate instigating the job is not an expearienced gate specialist. And beginning to get cold feet.

Thanks for the feedback.

Jamie.

With respect 8yf ... I would leave this kind of job well alone and gain your base experience for a good few years .. as your mate seems to be side stepping a competent Gate Installing company who can sign this off and ensure it is safe then someone else would hold that responsibility and if you get involved it may be on your shoulders and your experience been limited will mean you may dig a big hole for yourself... anyone doing a gate system like your case should either get a competent company in to connect, test and sign off the work if it means you only run the cables etc or leave alone or like Post 5 you could be looking at some serious consequences.

hi mate, i fit door access and have replaced a few gate intercoms. if your running cat 5 run 2 cables (incase a rat chews through one lol) trust me will save you in the long run. but the intercom is most probably 12V

if you just drag a few 10mm 5 core armored cable to the gate from the board you will cover all bases :)

In cases where extreme distances to gates are involved, would it be more practicle to have a apropriate IP rated sub main in an enclosure adjacement to the gate wired on a TT? (To get around the EFLI potencial issues).

I ask this question as a general knowlege thing.

P.S - I think I am going to decline involvement in the gate job as it was only on consulting stage anyway.

Jamie.

8YF, I would echo the above and say leave this to the pro's.
Having worked in facilities I have put a few supplys in for various auto doors and gates (which were installed by contractors)
Not sure if the same applys to Domestic installs but I know that for industrial uses Auto doors/gates have their own set of regulations and safety standards that they have to adhere to.
Some of the bigger gates have alot of grunt and could crush a full sized bloke never mind a child!

And my personal opinion is the damn things are more hassle than they are worth so I never know why people want them on their properties!!

Yeah, as I just said earlier I going to pull out of the proposed job, the amount of responcibilities to take on just for the sake of a few quid. It's crazy. Lol

Supply wise there isn't much to it, they generally don't draw much current, 5-10 A max, 2.5mm 3 core armour is generally more than enough depending on length of run. CAT 5 equivalent is enough for the intercom it'll only be 12-24v, best using outdoor armoured type depending on how it's being run!

Fitting and setting up the gate correctly and safely is another matter though!

Gate automation is most enjoyable type of electrical work I've carried out and highly recommend getting involved if possible!
