NVQ 2346-03 Replaces NVQ 2356-99 - AM2, AM2S & AM2E ??

The final registration for the City & Guilds NVQ 2356-99 (Mature Candidate Assessment) will be on 31/12/2020. This means that we cannot enrol anyone on the NVQ 2356-99 after 31/12/2020. Anyone enrolling on the City & Guilds NVQ 2356-99 before 31/12/2020 will have three years to complete the NVQ as the final certification date will be 31/12/2023. Most people successfully achieve the City & Guilds NVQ 2356-99 between three to eight months, however, the registration lasts for three years.

The City & Guilds NVQ 2356-99 is to be replaced by the City & Guilds NVQ 2346-03 Level 3 Electrotechnical Experienced Worker Qualification. Candidates for the new NVQ 2346-03 will need to have five years minimum experience within the industry. They will also need to successfully achieve the 18th edition and 2391-59 Initial Verification. Once they have achieved the NVQ 2346-03, 18th Edition and 2391-50 they can then take the AM2E.

The AM2E is the same as the AM2S, the difference between the AM2 and the AM2S/AM2E is that section A (installation composite) requires installation of steel and pvc conduit (AM2S/AM2E) whereas the AM2 does not require installation of any containment. Candidates taking the AM2S/AM2E are given ten hours for section A as opposed to eight and half hours for the AM2. We have posted a blog detailing the difference between the AM2, AM2S/E.

The AM2 will not be allowed to be used via the NVQ 2346-03 pathway, it MUST be the AM2E. If someone has already completed the AM2 and wishes to convert this to the AM2E they will need to resit section A of the AM2E at a cost of around £450.00 plus vat. For those candidates with more than five years experience and who have already achieved the AM2 but have not yet started the NVQ we would advise that you sign up to the NVQ 2356-99 before the final registration date. This will avoid the additional cost of resitting section A of the AM2E.

Regarding the new NVQ 2346-03 pathway, a point to note is that if candidates have the old AM2 (pre 2010) they will have to sit the entire AM2 assessment again as the old AM2 will not be recognised at all. Again, we advise that candidates with the old AM2 who have not yet registered/completed an NVQ should register on the NVQ 2356-99 before the final registration date.

Please note that the NVQ 2357 remains unchanged and this is typically aimed at candidates with less than five years experience and who have successfully achieved the 2365 level 2 & 3 (or equivalent 2330 2 & 3), unfortunately, the old qualifications 2360 etc are not recognised on this pathway. Candidates on this pathway will be able to use the AM2 as the end point assessment.

The final registration date for the NVQ 2356-99 has now been changed to 30th November 2020. Once registered you will have three years to complete the NVQ 2356-99, however, most people complete the NVQ between three to eight months or so...

UPDATED: The NET have recently advised that they will be offering a bridging unit for those who have already achieved the AM2 that will convert the existing AM2 to the AM2E. We understand that this only relates to those who have completed the AM2 after 2010. As such, the conversion should not cost as much as £450.00 as previously thought as this should only involve the installation of pvc and steel conduit.

For those candidates with more than five years experience and who have already achieved the AM2 but have not yet started the NVQ we would advise that you sign up to the NVQ 2356-99 before the final registration date. This will avoid the additional cost of resitting section A of the AM2E.

The new 2346 seems to have more component parts that need completing and doesnt seem to be able to use the AM2 as evidence for some sections like the 2356 did. The AM2E has added the conduit bending/fitting section that the AM2S has. NET dont seem to have released much information yet despite the announcement. I emailed them with no reply and asked a training centre and they said wait till January to see what comes out. City & Guilds certainly seem to have slid this exchange in without much pre warning.
