Guys,

Just finishing off a lean to extension to the rear of my house, I have a sparky coming out at the weekend to give us a quote for a couple of sockets and some downlight wiring, my question is I have an old style fuse box, is there a legal requirement to get this replaced for RCD consumer unit or is it just advisable ?

Cheers

Replacing fuse board with RCD consumer unit would be one way of providing the required protection to this extension and would also upgrade the rest of installation. There are other ways of providing the RCD protection to just the new work in extension. See what options he gives you.

It's always advisable.
It's most times easier for the electrician to work with a new board and it provides a greater level of safety for you.
It does mean a good bit more expense.
It will also be possible and cheaper for the electrician to provide RCD protection for the work they do in other ways than a new board, such as a stand alone RCD or RCD Fused connection unit.

TBH if you plan to stay in the house for a while, a CU upgrade to fit a dual RCD board or better still a RCBO board would be a good investment.

Your "spark" should also check that the earthing and bonding are up to spec too.
